...is that it goes well if I'm accelerating in 4th before the shift. If I'm already up to speed before shifting, that's when the problem shows up, and I have to keep upward pressure on the shift lever as I let the clutch in so it'll pop into gear.
I wonder if this has to do with how close the ratios are between 4th and 5th? Maybe whatever gears have to mesh have nearly the same number of teeth, so that it's harder to find an "opening"? That's just a guess; I'm no mechanic :-)
